About Creative Pathways

I approach design with equal parts logic and intuition. Whether I’m working on a knitting or quilting pattern, I focus on making the process smooth, the instructions clear, and the result beautiful.

And so each of my patterns has these benefits:

  • You'll understand the why in addition to the what.

  • You'll have options, so you feel free to make your work your own.

  • You’ll understand what the words mean.

  • You'll be able to keep track of where you are in case you're interrupted.

When you use one of my patterns, you’ll feel as if you have a helpful friend sitting by your side.

Over years of teaching, I learned how to spot the moments when people get stuck. My goal is always to prevent your frustration before it starts—giving you the tools you need to move forward with confidence and joy.

My specialty is colorwork. I think color makes us feel good. When you go into a colorful local store, you feel happy! In my knitting patterns, I often use beads for a touch of sparkle, to make us all happy.

About Cynthia

I grew up in central Pennsylvania, where creativity and practicality were part of everyday life. My mother, aunts, and grandmothers were always working with fiber, while my father, uncles, brothers, and grandfathers were constantly building, inventing, and figuring out how things worked. Practicality was our superpower—but our family also believed that useful things should be beautiful.

I earned a B.S. in Business from Penn State University, followed by a master’s degree in writing. There, I studied with my mentor, the late Rob Gannon, science editor of Popular Science and a prolific writer for publications including Reader's Digest and many books. Rob taught me that writing should be both logical and captivating. After graduation, I worked as a technical writer and later taught writing at Penn State.

My interest in teaching and learning eventually led me to earn a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. I became fascinated by how people acquire new skills and what motivates them to keep going—topics that continue to inspire me.

Rather than following a traditional academic path, I combined my love of teaching, writing, and making by opening Stitch Your Art Out, a yarn and fabric shop, which I owned for 22 years. During that time, I developed knitting and quilting patterns under the name Really Clear Designs, with one goal in mind: to make complex techniques easy to understand and enjoyable to create. When I closed the store, I wanted everything to feel fresh.

So here we both are, at our Creative Pathways!
